I've been pondering the idea of bellydance as therapy for anorexics/bullimics, especially girls. Has anyone heard of anything like this?

Re: Bellydance as therapy?
Fri, September 9, 2005 - 8:04 PMNope haven't heard of a formal program...
However, I do know that the acceptance and encouragement of being comfortable in your body in order to move your body... is healthy and great and healing.
I'm sure you could blend it and address the 'bully in the mirror" in many ways through belly dance.... How to you round the angular lines of the anorexic? How do you show them pride in the softness....?
Try posting to some of the belly dance tribes and see if you get a bite there... I'm postive there are dancers around TRIBE that have backgrounds in those illnesses....

Re: Bellydance as therapy?
Mon, September 19, 2005 - 7:25 PMI've been bellydancing for years and recall once hearing on the med-dance e-mail list about someone who was teaching a belly dance class for women who had experienced sexual abuse. A psychologist was present during class as well, so if anyone re-experienced something then they could be supported professionally. I don't know who, what, where or anything more detailed than that.

Re: Bellydance as therapy?
Thu, February 23, 2006 - 8:50 AMI am very interested in Belly Dance as a vehicle for group therapy with adolescent girls with a vareity of issues. I am a belly dance instructor as well as a Certified Social Worker beginning work on my licensure. I just accepted a therapist position working with adolescent girls in a treatment facility and want to learn about dance therapy in general. I have never combined my profession and my passion but I love the idea. So any ideas on where to get started exploring dance therapy would be great. I would love to find an intensive workshop to get immersed in the tennants of dance therapy.
I do beleive that Belly dance is one of the most accepting and most gentle dance forms (I have a background in ballet, Irish Step, and West African) It massages the spine, muscles and reinforces good posture. It is a dance that loves curves and roundness. (Who wants to see a bone thin belly dancer) I used to hate my post baby tummy but now it is invaluable to my part time career. All that said all the research points to a need for control as the root cause of eating disorders and the body denial/hatred as being a symptom....I will have to think about that. I am so glad to find this tribe. Fatin

Tue, March 21, 2006 - 5:53 PMThanks for the link. You are not the first dancer that I know that has found relief from chronic pain thru BD. I have several dancer friends with FM and MS that feel that it has been a real benefit to them in their pain management.

Re: Bellydance as therapy?
Sat, January 13, 2007 - 10:50 AMThere is a documentary called "Belly" by Filmmakers Library that talks about how belly dance helped a young woman with bulimia in the healing process. Now, the young woman in question was definitely getting real therapy too, but she found that belly dancing helped her come to terms with some of the ideas her therapist was helping her work on.
I wrote a couple of articles for my web site on the subject "Healing Through Belly Dance." The articles are anecdotal rather than scientific research, but they do address how it has helped some people. One of them focuses on physical healing, the other on psychological. Here are the links:
Physical: www.shira.net/heal-phys1.htm
Emotional: www.shira.net/heal-emo1.htm
At the bottom of both articles are a whole bunch of links on related articles elsewhere on the web.
