Re: Expressive arts therapy programs in SF?
Fri, December 15, 2006 - 9:06 AMI've looked at the California Institute of Integral Studies www.ciis.edu. I went to an info session and really liked it. It's something that i've thought about doing for a long time. Also, when i lived back east, I looked at Antioch College and Lesley University. I think San Diego State University has a program too?
I'm pretty close to looking into applying next year.

Re: Expressive arts therapy programs in SF?
Wed, January 31, 2007 - 9:27 AMI'm appling to CIIS for September, to the Drama Therapy program. I'm very interested in movement and dance as well, and so am also planning to start the movement based expressive arts program at Tamalpa in April (that is rooted in Anna Halprin's work).
CIIS leads to the MFT which is very very useful, and the Tamalpa program speaks very deeply to my heart...Anna Halprin has weekly classes Tuesday night and Thursday morning, where one can learn about her method through participating/experiencing.
Have you ever done any work with Vinn Marti? Soul Motion...he's going to be in El Cerrito this weekend -- a tender and powerful teacher, and a very beautiful method of dance/movement for growth. I recently attended a workshop with him at Esalen...it was one of the most transformative workshop experiences I have had, and the shifts happened through the experience rather than through analyzing those experiences cognitively.
What programs are you looking at?

Re: Expressive arts therapy programs in SF?
Tue, March 6, 2007 - 12:58 AMi just finished level 1 training at Tamalpa Institute, www.tamalpa.org, located on Mt. Tam north of the Bay.....
This program is a 2 level movement-based expressive arts training program led by Daria Halprin, daughter of modern dance and dance therapy pioneer Anna Halprin (who also occasionally teaches there and has her own weekly classes, too). 1st level is personal embodiment of the work, 2nd is professional training.
I have been VERY happy with the training there. Daria has been developing this work as a pioneer in her field as well...since the formation of the institute in the 70's. She occasionally teaches at CIIS, too.
I also am just finishing up my MA in Counseling Psych. at Pacifica Graduate Institute (www.pacifica.edu). The two programs are extremely complementary and engaging.
Both are offered as one weekend per month intensives, allowing you to have a life/job/travel/etc while going to school! or, at tamalpa, you can do a 3 month intensive for each level.
also, this 'movement-based' work...so it is a nice combo of dance therapy and expressive arts therapy. and the studio is BEAUTIFUL, set a lovely redwood forest just a little up the hill from Kentfield/San Rafael/Fairfax.
good luck and feel free to write me w/any questions you might have!
